Visit To Headley Court - 26th Feb 2010

On the 19th and 20th November 2009 I held a workshop in Brewers Quay. The workshop was to make lap quilts for servicemen and women injured on active duty. The money received for the workshop raised £645 for Help for Heroes and the quilts that were made on the day were taken to Healdey Court on 26th February 2010.

Above you can see a photo of me handing over one of the 19 quilts made to Tom Stimpson, the Chief Clerk for Headley Court. Tom was kind enough to escort myself and a group of donors, who had raised money for Headley Court, around the facility. We were shown the main gym, where injured servicemen exercise (you may have seen this on TV), the hydrotherapy pool, the prosthetics laboratory (also on TV) where artificial limbs are assembled and the site of the new pool. The new pool is in a purpose built building paid for entirely from donations to Help for Heroes. It will have a large hydrotherapy pool, with a floor that can be raised or lowered.

After the tour we were shown a slide show which explained how the military care system worked and a history of Headley Court. As you can see from the photo of the plaque, Headley court has been rehabilitating airmen since 1950. It now treats Army, Navy and Airmen who are injured throughout the World.

I know that several women have still to finish quilts. Please do not worry, we will collect them in the shop. We will then courier them to Headley Court where the ward staff will distrubute them to the injured servicemen. If you wish to enclose a letter with the quilt please do.

Thank you all for your help and support.
